Embedded within a rich tradition, quiltmaking has become increasingly modern over the past five decades. Today, artists often dye their own fabrics, using their own rich individual colorations; some may even screenprint their fabrics or paint markings, discharge, or use combinations of surface design techniques, all used to enrich the sensibility of their final works. The flat, abstract compositions in COLOR IMPROVISATIONS display an extra depth by the added intense lines of quilting.
For these reasons contemporary quilts are often inspirational to artists in all fields.
